    • "The Unready" (the "ill-advised"). King of England 978-1016. Attempted to buy off the invading Vikings but lost his kingship 1013-14 when the Danish king, Sweyn Forkbeard forced him into exile in Normandy. Recalled on Sweyn's death, but died a couple of years later as Cnut threatened invasion.
