Llewelyn ap Iorwerth

John Schuerman

(j-schuerman@uchicago.edu)

In the August 2014 issue of Wordens Past, I discussed the ancestry of Eve of Leinster.  Her ancestors were primarily Irish, constituting a large proportion (though not all) of the Irish ancestors of Peter Worden I, the immigrant to Cape Cod.  Here I explore the Welsh ancestry of Peter Worden, that is, the ancestors of Llewelyn ap Iorwerth, a Welsh prince who lived 1173-1240.  Besides his Welsh heritage, Llewelyn also shared a number of Irish ancestors with Eve of Leinster.

I begin with the descent from Llewelyn to Peter Worden:

Llewelyn ap Iorwerth b.1173, d. 1240

Margaret of Wales, Illegitimate by an unknown mother

Sir William de Braose b.1224, d. after 1290/91 = Aline de Multon

Lord William de Braose d. 1326

Aline de Braose b.1289, d. 1331= Lord John Mowbray b. 1286, d. 1322/23

Christiana de Mowbray d. 1363 = (3rd husband) Sir William Plumpton d. 1362

Alice Plumpton = Sir Richard Sherburne d. 1369/70

Margaret Sherburne = Richard Bayley d. before 1387

Richard Bayley alias Sherburne b.1381, d. 1441 = Agnes Harrington

Richard Sherburne d. 1441 = Alice Hamerton

Agnes Sherburne = Henry Rushton d. before 1490

Nicholas Rushton b. after 1454, d. 1508 = Margaret Radcliffe

Agnes Rushton = Richard Worthington d. 1526

Peter Worthington b.1514, d. 1577 = Isobel de Anderton

Isobel Worthington d. 1580 = Robert Worden d. 1580

Peter Worden I b. after 1569, d. 1638/39 Yarmouth, Massachusetts

Below is a table of the ancestry of Llewelyn.  As before, this is a compact ancestral chart.  Fathers are above the individual, mothers below.  Sometimes fathers or mothers are on a previous or later page.  The numbers are generation numbers.  An individual’s father can be found by looking for the next generation higher above the individual.  Many of these names had diacritical marks which have been omitted here.  Some of the individuals were ancestors of Llewelyn more than once (indicated by “Already Printed,” after which the ancestors are not repeated).  Individuals marked with an asterisk (*) are ancestors of Eve of Leinster.

As with Irish ancestors, the medieval Welshmen did not have last names as we know them, rather they used patronymics, that is, people were identified by their fathers’ first names.  The qualifier ap meant son of and ferch meant daughter of.  (For the Irish ancestors, as indicated in the previous article, mac means son of, ingen means daughter of.)

As in my previous article, I depend here largely on the work of Stewart Baldwin, here his table of the ancestors of Llywelyn ap Iowerth at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~medieval/llywelyn.htm.  In addition to the Irish sources cited previously, Baldwin made use of a number of Welsh annals.  I have also consulted J. E. Lloyd,  History of Wales, 1930 and the Dictionary of Welsh Biography.  Further as before, some sources show many more ancestors than provided here, but these are questionable, often mythical.
